Family Health Team Providers
Vanessa Power, Nurse Practitioner (RN EC, MSc Nursing)
Vanessa joined the Marathon Family Health Team in September 2008 following completion of a Master in Nursing degree from the University of Manitoba. Her role at MFHT is to provide primary health care services to clients of all ages in collaboration with physicians and other health team members. As well, she provides chronic care management for clients with diabetes within the diabetes program. Prior to joining MFHT, Vanessa’s nursing experience included acute care, home care and outpost nursing.
Laura Johnston, Registered Nurse
(RN)
Laura joined Marathon Family Practice January 2nd, 2002 and was the first Marathon Family Health Team member starting on December 5, 2005. She is a RN Respiratory Educator and provides patients with counseling, education and provides nursing services for all programs. She has been involved with the development of a number our interdisciplinary programs including the RN managed INR program, asthma program and COPD program. She continues to be an active team member providing care as part of these programs. Among other nursing duties, Laura provides phone triage and communication of test results to patients. Prior to working for our team Laura worked for Wilson Memorial General Hospital for twenty-four years in obstetrics, medical, emergency, chemotherapy, ER triage and cardiac care.
Alice Joseph, Registered Nurse (RN)
Alice came to work with the Marathon Family Health Team in December 2005. In addition to regular nursing duties, she is the clinic nurse responsible for infection control, N95 Fit Testing, WHIMIS training, and purchasing. Since joining MFHT Alice has been involved in the development of nursing policies and procedures and development of the RN managed INR program. She has completed her Diabetes Educator Certificate and has recently started seeing patients with diabetes. Before joining our team, Alice worked in purchasing at Wilson Memorial Hospital and, in her spare time, she is a VON nurse.
Ashraf Sefin, Physician Assistant candidate
Ashraf joined the Marathon Family Health Team in March 2010 as a participant of the Physician Assistant Pilot Initiative, launched by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care in 2010 for Family Health Teams. After successful completion of his written exams and an eight-week practicum, Ashraf will be assigned to the Marathon Family Health Team until January 2012. Ashraf’s role is to provide primary health care services to patients of all ages under the supervision of one of the primary group registered physicians. Prior to joining the Marathon Family Health Team, Ashraf worked as a Family Physician in Egypt.
Ada Parson, Registered Practical Nurse (RPN)
Ada joined our Team on July 17, 2006. Her primary role is blood pressure screening and monitoring and offering self-management information as part of the interdisciplinary Hypertension Reduction Program. She also performs wound care, wart treatments and foot care and is one our telemedicine nurses. Prior to joining our team she worked part-time for a year at Wilson Memorial General Hospital.
Mona Laderoute, Registered Practical Nurse (RPN)
Mona joined our team in April 2009. She practices preventative health care, health teaching immunizations, telehealth conferencing, blood pressure screening and monitoring, wound care, wart and foot care. Before joining us, Mona had retired in 2006 after 33 years of work as an acute care RN at Wilson Memorial General Hospital.
Kerri-Lynne Cornish, Social Worker (BA, BSW, RSW)
Originally from small town Manitoba, Kerri-Lynne has been a part of the Marathon Family Health Team since December 2005. Her role is to restore, maintain and enhance social functioning with individuals, families and community through short-term episodic counseling, assessment, referral and assistance with other social service supports. Since joining MFHT Kerri-Lynne has participated in the development of mental health, urgent care and smoking cessation programs. She is also the lead facilitator with the Ontario Association of Social Workers for social workers working in Family Health Teams.
Pearl Giuliano, Registered Dietitian (RD, MSc, CDE)
Pearl became a part of our team in the fall of 2008. She provides knowledge and support to people to help them make changes to their eating habits. Pearl works with people of all ages to promote healthy lifestyles, manage a chronic disease or change problem eating behaviours. Clients include individuals, families, groups and the wider community. In addition to working with our team, Pearl also works with the Marathon Diabetes Education Clinic and is a preceptor for the Northern Ontario Dietetic Internship Program. Before joining us she worked for many years as Outpatient Dietitian at Wilson Memorial General Hospital and Manitouwadge General Hospital. She also worked for the Manitouwadge Diabetes Health and Wellness Program and has been a Research Advisor for the Northern Ontario Dietetic Internship Program.
