900 Minute Challenge Information
Do you know the most effective way to improve your fitness level, increase your muscle and bone mass, boost your mood, have better sleep, feel more energized, improve your circulation, lower your stress level, reduce depression symptoms and reduce your risk of developing chronic diseases (e.g. heart disease, diabetes and some cancers)? You got it! The answer is participating in regular exercise!
Are you ready to reap the many benefits of being a regular exerciser and have fun while doing it? If so, this is the perfect challenge for you! From May 14th to June 22nd, Marathon Family Health Team is challenging you to complete 900 minutes of exercise!
Why 900 minutes? The Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines recommend that adults accumulate 150 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) per week to help reduce their risk of chronic disease and help them live a longer, healthier and happier life. Therefore, during the six-week challenge, individuals are encouraged to participate in 150 minutes of MVPA per week, which will add up to 900 minutes of MVPA by the end of the challenge.
Individuals of all ages and ability levels are encouraged to participate in the challenge; thus, if reaching 150 minutes of MVPA per week seems overwhelming at first, start with 10 minutes per day and work your way up!
How can exercise minutes be accumulated? The goal of the challenge is to participate in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity in bouts of 10 minutes or more. What is MVPA? It’s any type of intentional physical activity that gets your heart pumping, gets you breathing harder, and/or gets you sweating (i.e. brisk walking, running, cycling, playing sports, weight lifting, etc). Any time you are intentionally participating in this type of activity for 10 minutes or more, it counts towards the challenge!
Interested in participating? All you have to do is fill out a registration form, gather some family members, friends, and/or coworkers, get your heart pumping, and have fun! Don’t have a team? Don’t worry! We’ll find you one!
