Marathon Family Health Team has signed up for the Community Better Challenge and we want you to join us! To participate, all you need to do is keep track of your physical activity minutes for seventeen days.
You might be thinking: “Why should I bother logging my physical activity minutes for this challenge?” Because it will give Marathon a better chance of winning the title of “Canada’s most active community” and a grand prize of $150,000!
It sounds too good to be true, right?
An organization that is passionate about improving health through physical activity, called ParticipACTION, is launching the Community Better Challenge which aims to encourage communities across Canada to get moving by offering them a chance to win a cash prize that they can use towards increasing physical activity opportunities in their community.
The challenge is called the Community Better Challenge and it will run from May 31st to June 16th, 2019. During that timeframe, participating communities will be working together to accumulate as many physical activity minutes as they can.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do they determine the winner? Communities of all sizes will be participating in this challenge. For this reason, ParticipACTION will be using a calculation to determine every community’s overall score to make sure that every community has an equal chance to win.
Who can participate? Anyone! It doesn’t matter what age you are, if you’re new to exercise or if you’re a marathon runner – the challenge is meant to bring communities together by encouraging everyone to increase their levels of physical activity no matter where they are at.
What is also great about this challenge is that there is not a specific number of physical activity minutes that you need to aim for every day. So this challenge really is for everyone! Even if you aren’t participating in any activity right now you are still encouraged you to participate in the challenge because every minute counts! Start by aiming for 10 minutes per day and work your way up.
How can you track your physical activity minutes? There are two ways to track your physical activity minutes throughout the challenge:
- Download the ParticipACTION app on your smart phone.
- Use the ParticipACTION website. Using the website is a great option for kids because they can have their parents log their exercise minutes for them. What’s also great about the website is that you can log physical activity minutes for a group of people; therefore, if you have family members or friends who don’t own a computer or don’t know how to use one, you can log their physical activity minutes for them.
With the challenge only being 58 days away, consider coming out of hibernation and starting to warm up for the challenge by slowly increasing your level of physical activity. By the challenge start date, you’ll be ready to challenge yourself to accumulate even more physical activity minutes!
