Everything you Need to Know about the Community Better Challenge
By keeping track of your physical activity minutes, you can help Marathon win $150,000!
It sounds too good to be true, right?
It’s as easy as it sounds… All you need to do to increase Marathon’s chance of winning $150,000 is register for the ParticipACTION Community Better Challenge and track your physical activity minutes for seventeen days!
How does the challenge work?
From May 31st to June 16th, communities across the country will be competing for the title of “Canada’s most active community” and the $150,000 grand prize. To win the title (and the cash that goes along with it), our community needs to accumulate more physical activity minutes than all other participating communities. Challenge accepted!
That means we need to GET MOVING, work together, and keep track of every single minute of physical activity!
Marathon Family Health Team needs your help to promote the challenge and to encourage your friends, family members, and coworkers to register!
More participants = More physical activity minutes = Better chance of winning
Registering for the challenge takes less than 5 minutes!
There are two ways to register for the challenge and to track your physical activity minutes:
Option 1: Download the ParticipACTION mobile app. The app is very user friendly and it can be a great tool to track your physical activity before and after the challenge. You can sync the app with various fitness trackers (i.e. FitBit, Garmin, Apple Watch) to make the process of tracking your physical activity minutes even easier! Keep in mind that you need to be 17 years of age or older to download the app.
Option 2: Go to the ParticipACTION website by clicking here. Using the website is a great option for those who do not have a smart phone, are under 17 years of age, and/or are looking to track physical activity minutes for a family/group of people. The website allows you to track physical activity minutes for up to ten family members, making it easy to track physical activity minutes for young children or for family members who may not feel comfortable using technology. The website also allows you to track physical activity minutes for an organization. Therefore, you can track physical activity minutes for your workplace, a group exercise class, a school activity, and for various team sports.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does ParticipACTION track each community’s total number of active minutes? When you sign up for the challenge using the mobile app or website, you will be asked to enter your postal code. Each postal code represents a specific community. All of the physical activity minutes you manually track (via the app or website) throughout the challenge will be added to your community’s total.
How does ParticipACTION determine the winner? Communities of all sizes will be participating in this challenge. For this reason, ParticipACTION will be using a calculation to determine every community’s overall score to make sure that every community has an equal chance to win.
Who can participate? Anyone! It doesn’t matter what age you are, if you’re new to exercise or if you’re a marathon runner – the challenge is meant to bring communities together by encouraging everyone to increase their levels of physical activity no matter where they are at.
What is also great about this challenge is that there is not a specific number of physical activity minutes that you need to aim for every day. So this challenge really is for everyone! Even if you aren’t participating in any activity right now you are still encouraged you to participate in the challenge because every minute counts! Start by aiming for 5 or 10 minutes per day and work your way up.
What counts as physical activity? The goal of the Community Better Challenge is to get community members moving together. As a result, there are no set parameters on how intense your activity needs to be. From walking to the grocery store to backyard spring cleaning, we want you to track it all! In terms of duration, every minute counts! The shortest duration of activity you can track is one minute, while the longest is 180 minutes.
Marathon Family Health Team is looking forward to getting active with you and taking full advantage of this great opportunity! Just imagine all of the great things we could do with $150,000…
