About Marathon

September 28th, 2009

Marathon has a population of approximately 5000. We also serve the neighbouring community of Heron Bay and the two First Nation Reserves at Pic River and Mobert. It is a resource-based community with its two biggest employers being the pulp mill (Marathon Pulp) and the gold mines (Williams Operating Corporation, Teck-Corona/David Bell). Please see the accompanying handout entitled: Marathon/Community Profile for more details.

We thought we should get your stay off to the right start, by talking about recreational opportunities first. This information will supplement the handout: Marathon/Activities.

Recreational resources:

Swimming pool (P: #229-1340 – Ext. 2244):
Located in the recreational complex next to the clinic, it includes a 25m pool, hot pool and sauna. Schedule varies during the year, if you’re interested go to the complex office and obtain a schedule.

Cross-country skiing/Peninsula Golf Course – (P: #229-1392)
This is a shared facility with the golf club. 15 km of world class (recent site of Ontario Provincial Cup Race) groomed trails and 5 km of these are lit. At the heated chalet are waxing benches, a concession and fireplace. Day use or seasonal membership. The golf course is a very well-maintained and scenic 9 holes.
Down-hill skiing (P: #229-1340 – Ext. 2244):
This modest hill with lifts is located at the visitor centre on the highway (~3km east of turn-off to Marathon). Usually has a short season due to a south-facing slope.

The rink is also located at the recreational complex. Again, if you’re interested, we can show you where to obtain a current schedule. There is also free public ice skating.
