The travel clinic program was initiated in 2008 to provide preventative health service locally to clients with simple out of the country travel plans. This is an uninsured service but is important from the standpoint of ensuring that people traveling are protected from preventable illness and injuries and that they understand the need to continue to care for chronic illnesses while abroad. To this end a standard consultation form has been created to facilitate information gathering and uniformity of education, medication and immunization dispensing.
Initial travel consult for clients are offered by Registered Nurses of the Marathon Family Health Team. With the use of the travel consult form, information is gathered about the nature of travel (destinations, length of stay, purpose of travel etc.), immunization history and specific requirements. Education is then provided and follow-up appointments for immunizations given accordingly. Appointments with their family physician may be booked if any special requirements for the client’s health or travel are necessary. The Family Physician will also provide assistance in terms of providing necessary prescriptions and other client-specific needs.
In addition to using internal MFHT resources, Thunder Bay District Health Unit (Travel Consult Department) is at times contacted for consults and for transfer of clients to their Travel Clinic, particularly for people with employment travel to high risk areas. The local Thunder Bay District Health Unit provides assistance in obtaining up to date immunization records when needed and provides information about the availability of vaccines for the individual client. The travel clinic program is delivered by the Marathon Family Health Team Registered Nurses primarily at the clinic and occasionally via telephone if the client is unable to come into the facility.
Travel Consult Fees: Since this is an uninsured program (not covered by OHIP) there are fees for travel consults and associated immunizations as follows:
Single traveler: $30 plus $15 per injection
Per couple: $45 plus $15 per injection
Per family: $80 plus $15 per injection
