Third Party Present in Examination Room

March 29th, 2010

Physicians and staff at Marathon FHT want to ensure that you as our patient feel as comfortable and secure as possible during a physical examination.

For that reason, we would like to make you aware of your right to have another person (third party) present in the exam room with you.

To exercise your right, simply ask the Health Care Assistant escorting you to the exam room that you would like to have another person of your choice (spouse, partner, family member, friend) or a clinic staff person, present with you during the physical examination.

There may also be some instances whereby your doctor may request the presence of a third party at your visit, if it includes a physical examination.  Your doctor also has the right to request this, and if such a request is made, the Healthcare Assistant will step into the examination room.

If the Healthcare Assistant is present in the exam room, they will act as an assistant to the Physician with specific components of the visit, as well as be there to ensure that Physician and Patient conduct is professional and appropriate to the nature of the visit.

Please also be advised, that if you do choose to have a third person present during your examination, and the information you are disclosing is very personal, the third party you choose to have there is not bound by the same rules and regulations that clinic staff are for patient confidentiality.

In this instance, the Marathon Family Health Team and staff will not be held accountable for breaches of patient confidentiality.
