Wound Care Management Program

April 6th, 2010

In February 2009, The Marathon Family Health Team in collaboration with Wilson Memorial General Hospital (WMGH) finalized a program to shift basic wound care services away from the emergency department to the family practice primary health care facility. Policy and procedures were developed and are now in place.

According to the policy for wound care management at MFHT, the objective is for MFHT to coordinate with WMGH to support the client’s needs for wound care management through application of dressing changes to assist with the prevention of infection, and promote healing. Clients and their family members will be offered education to support self care and dressing changes at home as appropriate.

This program is in addition to the basic wound care, suture & staple removal services already in place. The program is new and as the program becomes more established at MFHT, there will be a significant increase to the wound care services being currently offered. The RPN staff have been furthering their knowledge with self-education on wound care during this past fiscal year, and they plan to complete an online wound care course in the fall of 2009 being offered by the Canadian Association of Wound Care (CAWC).
