Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is a virus that can cause serious lung infections in older adults. While it might feel like a common cold for some, adults over 60, especially those with health conditions, are at higher risk of severe illness. RSV spreads easily through coughs, sneezes, or close contact, and is most active from late fall to early spring.
RSV Vaccines for Adults
Ontario offers a vaccine for high-risk older adults. This season (2025–26):
- Adults 75+ can get the vaccine for free (publicly funded)
- Adults 60–74 in certain settings or with specific health conditions are also eligible (see graphic)
Two vaccines are available in Canada (Arexvy and Abrysvo). Both have demonstrated high effectiveness in preventing severe disease from RSV. Currently, only one dose is recommended. If you previously received a dose of the RSV vaccine, you do not need another dose this season, as protection can last multiple years.
The RSV vaccine can be given at the same time as your flu or COVID-19 shot.
If you are not sure if you are eligible, please talk with your healthcare provider.
Not eligible for the free program?
Adults 60+ can still get the RSV vaccine with a prescription at a pharmacy or through a doctor. Some insurance plans may help cover the cost.
