Step Outside Community Challenge

The Marathon Family Health Team invites you to participate in this year’s community challenge. Throughout the month of June, have fun increasing your daily step count by participating in the Step Outside Challenge! The challenge involves using an activity tracker (e.g. pedometer or smartphone app) to count your steps, as well as teaming up with your friends, family, colleagues and neighbours to take positive strides towards better health.

Challenge information

  • A 32-day team challenge that starts on May 30th, 2022 (teams of up to six members).
  • The goal is to increase your physical activity levels by challenging yourself to accumulate more daily steps.
  • Participants are encouraged to accumulate steps by participating in outdoor physical activities. However, all types of physical activities will count towards the challenge.
  • All fitness and ability levels are encouraged to participate (three difficulty levels are offered).

Who can participate

  • Individuals aged 12+
  • Residents of Marathon, Biigtigong Nishnaabeg and Netmizaggaamig Nishnaabeg

Why is outdoor activity encouraged?

Although being physically active in any environment has wide-ranging health benefits, combining physical activity and exposure to nature can be a powerful tool to help you feel your best. In fact, research shows that individuals who spend more time in nature are generally happier and healthier. The Step Outside Challenge is a fun way to encourage individuals in our communities to increase their participation in physical activity and become more intentional about the amount of time they spend in nature.

Challenge levels

You will have the opportunity to choose a difficulty level that will challenge you based on your current physical activity levels. You will receive full points as long as you achieve your personal step goal. At the end of each week, your points will be added to your team’s total. The difficulty levels are as follows:

  • Level 1: Aim to accumulate a minimum of 5000 steps per day
  • Level 2: Aim to accumulate a minimum of 7500 steps per day
  • Level 3: Aim to accumulate a minimum of 10,000 steps per day

If you are not sure what level to choose, consider tracking your steps for one week and calculating your average steps per day in order to determine the step goal that would be right for you. For example, if your current weekly step average is 6000 steps per day, consider challenging yourself by registering for level 2.

Prize details

All members of the winning team will receive a $25 SportCheck gift card. There will also be prize draws throughout the challenge. The more you engage with our social media pages, the better your chances of winning!
